You got it right Mr. Stephen King!
By Joseph Parish
I am confident that there is just about no one in the western world who has not heard of Stephen King. Being an avid collector of Stephen King’s books I have managed to amass every first edition that was published including several with both a European and American version. I have always considered “The Stand” to be Mr. King’s best work so far. He stylishly managed to merge the unexpected and unusual with a genuine possibility for a climatic episode. It so happens that perchance Stephen was foreseeing in his imagination of this novel for it is highly possible that we are presently in the same state of affairs as the characters portrayed within his book.
Here we have before us a bizarre and mutated virus which is not restricted by borders or the magic of medical science. It has no known cure as of yet and attacks countries at random. We wander into the public areas of our cities and towns and instantly are reverted back to the chapters of the King novel as we witness the many people walking aimlessly around with face masks on. We stare in amazement and venture to guess if these paper shields will actually protect and save the persons life or merely make them look comical.
We glance at the newspaper sitting idly on the rack and make a mental note at the headlines peering out at us where the President of America has recommended that travel to Mexico be delayed however he has completely failed to stop the current influx of visitors from this hard hit country below us that is the birthplace of this dreaded disease. It is almost as if he is inviting the virus to visit America to help with our population explosion. He says with a grin on this face that the situation is being monitored by our government and that they will take whatever actions would be appropriate in the event of an out and out epidemic. Unfortunately, we fail to see him act upon any words which escape his mouth. It certainly seems like Mr. Obama has only one interest and that is being in the limelight and in front of the news cameras.
As we watch our local and national TV newscasts, we see a review of how eight students from a Queens high school in New York had initially contracted the virus which had originated in Mexico. The newscaster quickly relates of the other incidents that are occurring around our country as well. We can only cross our fingers that others do not follow suit however we know in our hearts that it will happen as surely as we are reading this article.
We start to wonder what terrible events will overtake us in the near future. Our imagination starts to soar a bit rampant and we envision sights of locusts invading all of America’s food crops. We see vast rivers of blood flowing all across our nation or possibly a flash from a nearby star going super nova and generating the potential for the elimination of all life on our planet. We quickly are frightened back to reality only to realize that the Taliban are on the verge of taking control of Pakistan and we recall that this is a country that has nuclear weapon capability.
Once again the visions of apocalyptic zest begin to attack our senses. If what we are starting to experience is only the tip of the iceberg would our government and the government controlled media tell the people the complete truth of what is occurring here in America? Perhaps not, it is likely that the media would maintain a silent lip in this chapter of our imaginative life.
Should we view all of this as a sort of plot designed to make Americans give up their civil liberties? Would we in the end view this as a bit strange that it has occurred at a time in American life when tea parties are growing in popularity and more people are becoming discontent with government intervention? We must also keep in mind that some states such as Texas have already reserved their right in declaring their own sovereignty from the federal government. This is a very strange order of occurrence indeed.
The strangest event of all that has surfaced so far and brings my imagination back to Stephen King’s book is the coincident which has occurred during Obama’s trip to Mexico’s anthropology museum. While at the museum Obama had the good fortune to meet with the well known Felipe Solis. Poor Mr. Solis however died the following day from symptoms similar to the swine flu. As far as I can tell Flagg, oh sorry, I mean Mr. Obama has not encountered any type of illness whatsoever. I leave you at this point with this previous thought in mind to ponder.
Let’s hope that we all wake up and find this entire situation either a bad dream invoked by Stephen Kings writing or a situation that is well under control.
