Could we experience meat rationing again?
By Joseph Parish
I am and always have been a history buff. I completely enjoyed learning about all the various phases of history and actually found that as a child when I was studying it I would visually project myself as being at that point in time and space. In effect I role played before it became popular.
On May the 3rd of 1944 the federal government and in particular the Office of Price Administration made available all meats which were previously rationed except for beef roast and beef steaks. Unfortunately at the same time they announced that they would cut in half the “red points” which were required to purchase staples such as butter, evaporated milk, cheese, beef steaks and roasts. In effect what this provided was that the average citizen would actually receive less of these desired products then they previously had.
This announcement suspending the rationing system for meat except for roasts and choice cuts brought to an end one of the home front battles that proved to be very unpopular at the time. The question that I see at this time is can this unfortunate event be repeated?
We have millions of additional people residing in America today as opposed to the World War II era. Less of our land is actually being employed for animal farming then during previous years. This amounts to more mouths to feed with less land and to me it looks like a very uncomfortable situation. Ration and price elevations are more then likely to occur during nation emergencies. Now let’s add to this the fact that many people believe diseases such as the swine flu comes from pigs so we can effectively eliminate this animal from the dinner table. Now if we also end up with an avian flu outbreak it is possible that the chicken and turkey industry will be harmed as well. Lastly let’s call into play the hoof and mouth disease or the mad cow situation and we have very few edible animals remaining. Still think rationing couldn’t happen again?
In 1944 the OPA Administrator who was a Mr. Chester A. Bowles stated that the rationing restrictions changed to allow some meats to be non-rationed items due to the drastically reduced Navy and Army demands. Well as survivalists all we can do is wait and see if it happens again.
